Something new under the sun: a look at Sunwing's new 2019-20 flights

While the weather may still be warm in Canada in the lead-up to the annual sun travel season, every year at this time Sunwing is already looking south, announcing the coming season’s new and returning flights.

This year, as in the past, several new routes will be launched from gateways across the country, giving travellers even more options to connect with sunny destinations as temperatures plunge and the snow flies.

With the 2019-20 sun travel season ready for take-off, here’s a coast-to-coast recap of the new flights that the tour operator has added across the country for this winter:

RIU Plaza Miami

Moncton to Miami

For the first time, Sunwing will be offering weekly flights from Greater Moncton to Miami, the first tour operator to offer this route. Flights will depart on Saturdays starting Feb. 8, 2020 until May 2, 2020. The addition of this new flight route brings Sunwing’s total destination offerings from Greater Moncton to six, including Puerto Plata, Punta Cana, Montego Bay, Cancun and Varadero.

In Miami, travellers can stay at Riu Plaza Miami, a stylish beachfront resort with spacious accommodations that are ideal for families and couples, located near Miami’s top attractions including art galleries and nightclubs.

Greater Moncton residents can also set sail on a cruise on board MSC Seaside or Norwegian Escape with Sunwing cruise packages that include flights, round-trip pier transfers, meals on board and accommodations.

RIU Emerald Bay, Mazatlan

Ottawa and Quebec City to Mazatlan

Operating from Dec. 17, 2019 until April 14, 2020, residents of Ottawa and Quebec City will have direct access to Mazatlan, Mexico with new Sunwing flights from both cities.

Vacationers can spend their days relaxing on one of the numerous golden-sand beaches of the aptly-named Golden Zone or strolling along the seaside Malecon boardwalk. In Old Mazatlán, travellers can experience the local culture as they traverse the cobblestone streets, admire the neoclassical architecture and enjoy live music in quaint plazas.

Travellers can choose from a wide range of resort options in Mazatlán. The newly-renovated and expanded Riu Emerald Bay is a popular choice for families, offering accommodation options for five or more. At El Cid Castilla Beach, travellers can explore the shops and restaurants of the nearby Golden Zone.

And visitors can immerse themselves in the local culture at Playa Mazatlan Beach Hotel, with exclusive Viva Mexico inclusions like Spanish lessons and tequila tasting classes.

Memories Flamenco Beach Resort, Cayo CocoNew Cuba and Mexico flights from Hamilton, ON

Sunwing is offering travellers in the Hamilton and southern Ontario’s Greater Golden Horseshoe more tropical destination options than ever, with a total of six flight services available this coming winter, including the introduction of service to Cayo Coco (offered Sundays from Dec. 15, 2019 to April 12, 2020); Cayo Santa Maria (Fridays from Dec. 13, 2019 until April 10, 2020) and Cancun (Sundays from Dec. 15, 2019 until April 12, 2020).

The travel company is also bringing back perennial favourites Montego Bay and Punta Cana, along with Varadero which will benefit from twice-weekly flights on Wednesdays and Saturdays for the first time.

Vacationers who take advantage of the new Cayo Coco flight service can choose to stay at Memories Flamenco Beach Resort, located on a pristine white-sand beach and featuring activities and amenities for the whole family. Travellers headed to Cayo Santa Maria could opt for Grand Memories Santa Maria, offering a wide range of activities for all ages including a kids’ club.

In Cancun, vacationers can visit top-rated family resort Riu Dunamar, situated on the shores of Playa Mujeres and home to its very own Splash Water World water park, along with accommodation options for families of five or more.

Royalton Bavaro, Punta Cana

Sunwing is bringing two of its most popular vacation destinations a little closer to its customers in the London area this coming winter, introducing weekly flight services to Cayo Santa Maria (from Dec. 17, 2019 until April 7, 2020) and Punta Cana (from Dec. 18, 2019 to April 1, 2020). In addition, travellers can look forward to returning weekly flights to Montego Bay and Varadero.  

Vacationers can choose from a wide selection of top-rated resorts in Punta Cana such as Royalton Bavaro Resort and Spa, featuring upscale accommodations and amenities including an on-site splash pad and FlowRider surf machine. Those looking for an adults-only getaway can visit Riu Republica, a perennially popular resort that’s home to the Caribbean’s only water park exclusively for adults.

Travellers heading to Cayo Santa Maria, can stay at Sanctuary at Grand Memories Santa Maria, an adults-only oasis nestled within Grand Memories Santa Maria. This resort-within-a-resort offers a tranquil atmosphere and spacious junior suites complete with an in-room liquor dispenser and attentive butler service.

Victoria to Mazatlán and Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo

From Victoria this winter, Sunwing passengers will now be able to reach two new Mexican destinations: Mazatlán and Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo.

Flights to Mazatlán will depart on Saturdays from Dec. 21, 2019 until March 28, 2020, while flights to Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo will depart on Sundays from Dec. 22, 2019 until March 29, 2020. There will also be two returning favourites to Sunwing’s winter lineup from Victoria: Huatulco and Los Cabos.

In Mazatlán, vacationers can stay at Riu Emerald Bay, while in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, travellers can opt for Azul Ixtapa Resort, a family-friendly property with a mini water park, kids and teen clubs.
