Sunwing receives permit approval for Planet Hollywood St. Maarten Beach Resort

Sunwing has received approval from the government of St. Maarten to begin construction on its new Planet Hollywood St. Maarten Beach Resort, PAX has learned.

The news was revealed in a letter addressed to timeshare owners at the former Sonesta Great Bay Beach Resort and Casino, which was destroyed by Hurricane Irma in 2017 and will be replaced by the new 14-storey Planet Hollywood property.

Local newspaper The Daily Herald reports that construction is expected to commence in the coming days and that the property will take 18 months to complete. In the timeshare letter, Cathy Carasso, sales and marketing manager for Royal Islander Club Great Bay (the timeshare associated with the property) said that the property is expected to open sometime in 2021, but that the exact date is yet to be confirmed.

Planet Hollywood St. Maarten Beach Resort is the hotel chain’s third property following its partnership with Sunwing to bring the brand into the luxury all-inclusive category in the Caribbean and Central America; Planet Hollywood Beach Resort Costa Rica opened in fall 2018 with Planet Hollywood Resort Cancun set to welcome its first guests by the end of 2019.
