Winter storm cancels flights in southern U.S.

Hundreds of flights have been cancelled in the wake of a massive winter storm in the southern U.S., which blanketed several states with snow and freezing rain over the weekend.

The U.S. National Weather Service is calling for a “prolonged period of snow” to last into today (Dec. 10), with North Carolina and southern Virginia seeing the worst of the storm. The two states, along with parts of South Carolina, saw several inches of snow as a result of the storm, prompting officials in those states to declare emergencies in some regions. According to reports, mountain areas of North Carolina could see up to 30 cm of snow.

Multiple accidents on interstate highways have caused massive delays, which urged North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper to stay off the icy roads.

Meanwhile, Charlotte Douglas International Airport reported that more than 1,000 American Airlines flights were cancelled on Sunday, with alerts issued at nine additional airports throughout the region.

Travellers heading south are advised to check with their airline for flight delays and cancellations.
